Text Messages vs Push Notifications for Door-Open Alerts
When a refrigerator or freezer door is accidentally left open, detecting the problem is only part of the solution. The alert also needs to reach someone who can act on it.
Connected door sensors may use phone push notifications, text messages (SMS), or other notification methods. Push notifications and text messages can both provide remote alerts, but they work differently.
What is a push notification?
A push notification is an alert sent through an app installed on your phone.
For a door-open monitoring system, a push notification might tell you that a freezer or refrigerator door has remained open beyond a selected delay.
Push notifications are convenient because they appear directly on a smartphone and generally do not have a per-message SMS cost.
However, push notifications depend on the app being installed and notifications being permitted for that app.
What is a text message alert?
A text message alert, also called an SMS alert, is delivered to your phone through its normal text-messaging service.
For example, a door sensor could send a text message indicating that a garage freezer door has been left open.
SMS can be useful because the alert arrives alongside your normal text messages rather than only through a particular app.
Is SMS better than a push notification?
Neither is universally better. They provide two different ways of delivering an important alert.
Push notifications can be a good choice for frequent notifications and normal day-to-day monitoring.
Text messages can provide another notification channel for events that you particularly want to notice.
Having more than one notification method can also be useful. If an important door-open condition occurs, receiving a push notification and a text message gives you more than one opportunity to notice the alert.
Why the alert delay still matters
The notification method doesn't determine when an alert should be sent.
A door monitoring system can first use a delay to determine whether the door has actually been left open.
For example:
- The freezer door opens.
- The door-open timer starts.
- The freezer is used normally and the door closes before the delay expires — no alert is necessary.
- If the door remains open beyond the selected delay, the system generates an alert.
- That alert can then be delivered through the configured notification method.
This helps avoid unnecessary push notifications or text messages every time the freezer is opened normally.
What about alarms inside the home?
Remote phone alerts don't have to be the only notification method.
Some connected monitoring systems can also work with smart-home devices to provide audible announcements inside the house. This can be useful when someone is home but isn't looking at their phone.
The best notification method depends on where the freezer or refrigerator is located, whether someone is home, and how you prefer to receive important alerts.
