How Door Sensors Can Help Prevent Freezer Food Loss
A freezer can keep food cold for a long time, but a door that is accidentally left open creates a different problem: warm air can continuously enter the freezer while cold air escapes.

What does a freezer door sensor detect?

Door sensors and temperature monitors solve different problems
Both can be useful, but they monitor different conditions.
A door sensor detects that the door has been left open.
A temperature monitor detects that the temperature inside the freezer has changed.
A temperature monitor can identify problems that have nothing to do with the door, such as a cooling-system failure or power outage. A door sensor, however, can identify an open-door event before the freezer necessarily becomes warm enough to trigger a temperature alarm.
Some households may benefit from using both.
Why a built-in freezer alarm may not be enough
Some refrigerators and freezers already include door-open alarms.
The limitation is often not detection—it is where the alert can be heard.
If the freezer is in a garage or basement, you may not hear its alarm from inside the house. You also cannot hear a local appliance alarm when you're away from home.
A connected door sensor can overcome this limitation by delivering the alert somewhere other than the freezer itself.
