What Alexa announcements do

Doorsound can trigger an Alexa spoken announcement when a door is left open long enough to generate a Doorsound alert.

This allows Alexa to announce when a freezer door is left open after your selected delay.

This means:

• The door must remain open past your selected delay time
• A push notification or text message alert must be triggered
• Alexa then announces the alert inside your home

Alexa announcements depend on both the Alexa Routine and a Doorsound alert event being generated.

Before you start

You’ll need:

• The Amazon Alexa app on your phone
• Your Doorsound account email + password
• Your Doorsound device already set up and online (Wi-Fi connected)

Step 1: Enable the Doorsound Alexa skill

1. Open the Amazon Alexa app
2. Search for and enable the Doorsound skill
3. When prompted, complete account linking by signing in with your Doorsound email address and password

After linking, Alexa will automatically start device discovery.

Step 2: Confirm device discovery

Once discovery completes:

• Your Doorsound device should appear in the Alexa app under Devices
• It will typically show up as a contact sensor (open/close)

If you don’t see it, jump to Troubleshooting below.

Step 3: Create an Alexa Routine for the “Door Left Open” announcement

Alexa announcements are created using a Routine. Here’s the exact flow:

A) Create the Routine trigger (“When”)

1. In the Alexa app, go to Routines
2. Tap + to create a new routine
3. Under When, tap Add an event (the + icon)
4. Select Smart Home
5. Select your Doorsound device
6. For the condition, choose:

• • Contact sensor is… → Open
• Tap Next

Note: The Alexa routine listens for the door opening event, but the spoken announcement will only occur when a Doorsound alert is triggered (after your preset delay).

B) Add the announcement action (“Alexa will”)

1. Under Alexa will, tap Add an action (the + icon)
2. Select Alexa says
3. Select Customized
4. Enter what you want Alexa to say, for example:

• “Freezer door left open”
• “Garage freezer door is open”
• “Please close the freezer”

C) Choose where the announcement plays (“Hear Alexa from”)

1. Under Hear Alexa from, choose the Alexa device(s) you want to announce from
   (for example: an Echo in the kitchen, hallway, or bedroom)
2. Tap Save to save the routine

Step 4: Test it

1. Door opens
2. Doorsound delay timer starts
3. If the door remains open past the delay
4. Doorsound sends push and/or text notification
5. Alexa announcement is triggered

This ensures you don’t get announcements during normal use.

Tips for better real-world setup

• Use a phrase that’s unmistakable, like: “Freezer door left open.”
• Choose an Alexa device that people will actually hear (kitchen / living room / hallway).
• If you have multiple doors/devices, create a routine per door with a unique phrase:
  • “Basement freezer door open”
  • “Garage freezer door open”

Troubleshooting

My Doorsound device didn’t show up in Alexa Devices

Try:

• Confirm you can log into the Doorsound app with the same email/password you used for Alexa linking
• Run Discover Devices again in the Alexa app
• Disable and re-enable the Doorsound skill, then re-link your account
• Ensure the Doorsound device is online and connected to Wi-Fi

The routine saves, but Alexa doesn’t announce

Check:

• The routine is enabled
• You selected a device under Hear Alexa from
• The Alexa device volume isn’t muted / too low
• The Doorsound device appears as a sensor and shows state changes (open/close)

Important: Notifications must be enabled

Alexa announcements are tied to the same event that triggers Doorsound alerts.

For Alexa announcements to work:

• Push notifications must be enabled
  or
• Text message alerts must be enabled

If neither push nor text alerts are enabled, no Doorsound alert event is generated — and Alexa will not announce.
