How alerts work and how to use Doorsound features
These guides explain notifications, text alerts, and smart speaker announcements, plus simple step-by-step setup instructions.

How to Add a Phone Number for Doorsound Text Alerts

Doorsound can send a text message (SMS) when a monitored door remains open long enough to trigger an alert.

During setup, you first tell Doorsound that you want to use text messaging and enter the phone number where you want to receive alerts. You then choose which of your DoorSound alert triggers should send a text message.

Step 1: Select Text Messages during device setup

After your device serial number is validated, the Doorsound mobile app asks which features you plan to use.

The available options include:

  • Hear a chime each time the door opens
  • Receive text messages
  • Hear speaker announcements
  • Trigger IFTTT

Select the checkmark next to Receive Text Messages.

A phone number field will appear. Enter the phone number where you want to receive Doorsound text alerts.

Select any other features you plan to use, then tap Continue.

Step 2: Configure your first alert trigger

The app will guide you through the settings for your first door-open alert trigger.

You will select:

  1. Time delay — how long the door can remain open before the trigger activates.
  2. Alarm duration — how long the Doorsound alarm will sound.
  3. Alarm level — the volume level of the alarm.
  4. Features for this trigger — what should happen when this particular alert is triggered.

If you want a text message for this trigger, select Text Messages when choosing its features.

For example, you could configure a trigger with:

  • Time delay: 30 seconds
  • Alarm duration: 5 seconds
  • Alarm level: Quiet
  • Text Messages: Enabled

With these example settings, when the door remains open for 30 seconds, Doorsound sounds a quiet alarm for 5 seconds and then sends a text message.

Step 3: Add another trigger if desired

After configuring the first trigger, the app asks whether you want to set up another trigger.

Doorsound supports up to three independent alert triggers.

If you select Yes, the app will take you through the same configuration process for the next trigger. You can choose a different time delay, alarm duration, alarm level, and features for each trigger.

If you want the additional trigger to send a text message, make sure Text Messages is selected for that trigger as well.

If you don't want another trigger, select No, I'm Done.

Step 4: Review the settings summary

After you finish configuring your triggers, Doorsound displays a summary of what will happen.

For example:

When the door is left open for 30 seconds, sound a quiet alarm for 5 seconds and then send a text message.

Review the summary carefully.

If everything is correct, submit the settings and continue to the next step of device setup.

If something isn't correct, you can go back and edit the settings before submitting them.

Important: Entering a phone number does not enable SMS for every trigger

There are two parts to setting up Doorsound text alerts:

First, select Receive Text Messages during the initial feature selection and enter your phone number.

Second, select Text Messages for each individual alert trigger that you want to send an SMS.

This allows you to decide independently which DoorSound triggers should generate text messages.

How Doorsound text alert timing works

Adding a phone number does not mean Doorsound sends a text every time the door opens.

Doorsound uses the time delay and alarm duration configured for each alert trigger.

The basic sequence is:

  1. The door opens.
  2. The Doorsound time delay starts.
  3. If the door closes before the selected delay expires, the trigger does not activate.
  4. If the door remains open beyond the selected delay, Doorsound sounds the configured alarm.
  5. After the alarm duration is completed, Doorsound sends a text message if Text Messages is enabled for that trigger.

For example, with a 30-second time delay and a 5-second alarm duration, the alarm begins after the door has remained open for 30 seconds. The text message is sent after the 5-second alarm completes.

This allows normal use of a refrigerator, freezer, or other monitored door without receiving unnecessary text messages.

Test your text message alert

After configuring your phone number and enabling text notifications, you can test the feature:

  1. Make sure your Doorsound device is online.
  2. Open the monitored door.
  3. Leave the door open beyond your configured alert delay.
  4. Allow the Doorsound alarm sequence to complete as configured.
  5. Confirm that you receive the text message.

Close the door after completing the test.

If you don't receive a text message

First check that:

  • Text Messages are enabled for the trigger you are testing.
  • The correct phone number is configured.
  • The Doorsound device is connected to Wi-Fi.
  • The door remained open long enough to trigger the configured alert.
  • Your phone can currently receive SMS messages.

If the door closes before the configured alert condition is reached, a text message will not be sent.

Text alerts and other Doorsound notifications

Text messaging is one of several ways Doorsound can alert you.

Depending on your configuration, Doorsound can also provide phone push notifications. Doorsound's Alexa integration can provide a spoken announcement from a selected Alexa device when a Doorsound alert is generated.

Using different notification methods can help an alert reach you in different situations—for example, an Alexa announcement while you're home and a text message when you're away.
